It’s too bad, because Perry’s vocals sounded pretty strong. It was just a poorly designed and executed stage show, so busy in approach that it gave fans little time to appreciate what should’ve been the main attraction: Katy Perry. She just totally lost the audience for a long stretch. It was truly remarkable how quiet the crowd was at times – and, mind you, not at the times when Perry would have wanted it. There were moments in the second half of the show where the SAP Center felt more like a library than a concert venue. They were successful at first, showering Perry with applause and affection early on in the show, but they steadily lost energy and enthusiasm throughout the evening. We’re talking tweens – on a school night – and they fought mightily to stay awake to see Perry. That’s always a bummer, but especially when you’re dealing with a fan base that skews so young. Show time was 7 p.m., yet she didn’t show up until about 9:30 p.m. The problems started well before she ever sang a note, as she made the fans wait for far too long before she took the stage. It produced one decent single “Chained to the Rhythm” – which is Perry at her most Madonna-esque – but the other songs have failed to catch on with the public.įortunately for her, she signed on to be a judge on the “American Idol,” which has helped keep her name in the news.īut she didn’t earn high marks with her showing in front of some 11,000 fans in San Jose.

1 (like basically everything else does these days), but it had no real staying power and quickly plummeted down the charts. It mostly circles around her new album, “Witness,” which is the first real dud she’s had since breaking big with “One of these Boys” in 2008. It’s been so bad that, really, it’s hard to say she even belongs to be discussed as being in the same league with her (former?) rival Taylor Swift. The pop star, who sold some 17 million copies of her first three major-label releases, is in a bit of a slump lately.
