Perry’s beefy live band kept the songs banging and her dancers gamely endured an endless series of outfit changes. Many songs had their own single-use oversize props, from dice for “Roulette” to a basketball court for “Swish Swish” to a lion’s head for “Roar.” For “Chained to the Rhythm,” two of her dancers wore “Lion King”-inspired puppets and played businessmen with television sets for heads, later changing into pink flamingos for “Hot n Cold.” The Left Shark - the most memorable thing about Perry’s 2015 Super Bowl halftime show - even joined her for “California Gurls.”Įach corner and nook of her stage lit up or moved or opened to a trap door. The best part of the night, ironically, was when Perry settled momentarily into the eye of the storm and softly sang the lovely “Thinking of You.” Of course, she did so while riding aboard the planet Saturn through the arena. The crowd seemed thrilled early on, watching all the high-priced gadgets whirl away and the special effects fire up. And the set list certainly had its share of good tunes, even though it did focus too strongly on the bland new material.īut it was hard to think about her singing and set list when we were being led through one over-the-top theatrical world after another. It’s too bad, because Perry’s vocals sounded pretty strong. It was just a poorly designed and executed stage show, so busy in approach that it gave fans little time to appreciate what should’ve been the main attraction: Katy Perry. She just totally lost the audience for a long stretch. It was truly remarkable how quiet the crowd was at times – and, mind you, not at the times when Perry would have wanted it. There were moments in the second half of the show where the SAP Center felt more like a library than a concert venue. They were successful at first, showering Perry with applause and affection early on in the show, but they steadily lost energy and enthusiasm throughout the evening. We’re talking tweens – on a school night – and they fought mightily to stay awake to see Perry. That’s always a bummer, but especially when you’re dealing with a fan base that skews so young.
